Best Paper Award in the Track of Image Processing and Computer Vision at MERCon 2026!

A research project team from the Department has secured the Best Paper Award in the Image Processing and Computer Vision category at the prestigious Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference 2026 (MERCon 2025).
The award-winning paper, titled “Machine Learning-Based Chlorosis Detection Using RGB Image Analysis and Electrophysiological Sensing,” was authored by graduates Isuri Liyanage, Yasas Savindu, Duleesha Samarakoon, and Nadeera Galawaththe, under the supervision of Prof. Vijitha Herath, Dr. Himal Suraweera, and Prof. Lilantha Samaranayake from the Department.
The research was presented on August 14, 2026, at the University of Moratuwa during the technical sessions of MERCon 2026. After a thorough review process, the paper was nominated for the Best Paper Award and recognized as the category winner at the MERCon 2026 Awards Ceremony, which took place at the Civil Engineering Auditorium, UoM, on August 15, 2025. This recognition highlights the University of Peradeniya's significant contributions to biomedical engineering research and demonstrates the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering's ongoing commitment to producing impactful research.
