Biography

Prof. Lilantha Samaranayake has been serving in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (FoE), University of Peradeniya (UoP), Sri Lanka since 2007. While in UoP, he has been a Research Fellow in the Kyushu Institute of Technology (KIT), Japan in 2006 and also in the Advanced Vehicle Engineering Centre, in the Cranfield University, UK from 2014 to 2016. He served on National Service in the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) of the government of Sri Lanka as a Senior Scientist in the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) from 2009 to 2011. He is the Chair of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section in 2010 and is a Senior Member of IEEE. His research career at KTH started in the area of Distributed Control Systems, which is to deal with Networked Control Systems closed via stochastic communication networks. He moved into Soft Actuators research at KIT with a more material science and mathematical modelling flavor which paved the way for him to enter Nanotechnology. At SLINTEC, he worked on wearable medical devices for vital sign monitoring, Ceylon Vein Graphite inventing a process to produce Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) and a production process for inserting nano particles to slow releasing fertilizer nanomaterials, where he secured US patents on the same. He spent his first sabbatical leave as a Research Fellow in the Cranfield University, UK, where he worked for the EPSRC funded Developing FUTURE Vehicles (Fundamental Understanding of Technologies for Ultra Reduced Emission Vehicles) project, which is a consortium of 10 leading UK industries and leading UK universities such as the Imperial College, London, University of Oxford, etc. He focused on the degradation control of electric vehicle (EV) powertrain components such as the EV battery and the motor. He has made 16 indexed journal publications and 40 peer reviewed conference publications with google h10 index of 11.
