Biography

Professor Abeyratne joined the University of Peradeniya in 1999 as a Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He received a merit promotion to the position of Professor in 2017, where he currently serves. He is a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He earned his BSc in Engineering from the University of Peradeniya in 1987, followed by his MEng and PhD from Gifu University, Japan, in 1992 and 1997, respectively. In 2001, he received R&D training at the Toshiba Schneider Inverter Corporation in Japan. Professor Abeyratne has an extensive international research background. He has worked as a Visiting Scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, and as a Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Central Queensland University, Brisbane Australia. He also served as an Associate at Curtin University, Perth. In addition, he has experience working in the industry as an engineer and is involved in industrial consultancies through the Engineering Design Center at the University of Peradeniya. His research interests primarily focus on power electronics applications, particularly in clean energy conversion technologies. In recognition of his contributions to small-scale industry, he received the prestigious Presidential National Science and Technology Award, along with a cash prize, in 2007.
