
Best Paper Award in the Biomedical Engineering and Instrumentation category at MERCon 2025!

A research project team from the Department has secured the Best Paper Award in the Biomedical Engineering and Instrumentation category at the prestigious Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference 2025 (MERCon 2025).
The award-winning paper, titled “Classification of Same Limb Motor Imagery EEG Using Temporal Attention Based Hierarchical Transformer”, was authored by graduates Minindu Liyanage, Pasan Gunasekara, and Ramith Laksara, under the supervision of Dr. Ruwan Ranaweera, Dr. Janaka Wijayakulasooriya, and Dr. Nalin Harischandra, together with Prof. Tharaka Dassanayake from the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine.
The research was presented on 14th August 2025 at the University of Moratuwa during the technical sessions of MERCon 2025. Following a rigorous review process, the work was nominated for the Best Paper Award and was recognized as the category winner at the MERCon 2025 Awards Ceremony, held at the Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo, on 15th August 2025. This recognition underscores the University of Peradeniya’s strong contribution to biomedical engineering research and further highlights the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering’s continued commitment to producing impactful research.
