Congratulations to Prof. Janaka B. Ekanayake on being awarded the NAAI (National Academy of Artificial Intelligence) Distinguished AI Scholar Award 2025 for his outstanding contributions to the field of artificial intelligence, in recognition of significant advancements in research and exceptional academic achievements.
This award aims to recognize scholars worldwide who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of artificial intelligence and related areas, covering multiple research directions such as computer science, machine learning, robotics, ethics, and mathematical theory.
Following a rigorous nomination and evaluation process, 44 exceptional scholars from diverse regions—Europe, America, Asia, and Australia—have been honored, highlighting the profound global impact of artificial intelligence research. The complete list can be found here.
As a Department member, we at DEEE are proud to have such an accomplished individual among our ranks. In addition to this recent honor, Prof. Ekanayake is also a Fellow of several prestigious organizations, including AAIA, IEEE, IET, NASSL, and IESL. It is clear that he is a highly respected and accomplished figure in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. As a Senior Professor and Chair of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Peradeniya, as well as a Visiting Professor at Cardiff University, UK, Honorary Professor at University of Wollongong, Australia, and Visiting Professor at UNITEN, Malaysia, Prof. Ekanayake has certainly made significant contributions to his field.
