Biography
Prof. Roshan Godaliyadda received his BSc Eng degree specialized in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with First Class Honors at the University of Peradeniya in 2005. He received his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2011. At present he is a professor attached to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya. His research projects are in the areas of Signal and Image Processing, Computer Vision, Hyper Spectral Imaging, Remote Sensing and Geoscience, Smart Grid and Renewable Energy, AI and Pattern Recognition, Bio Medical Signal Processing and Bio Imaging, Computational Epidemiology, Biometrics, Spectral Imaging for Food and Water Quality Estimation, Smart Surveillance, Stochastic Processes and Random Signal Analysis, and Image Forensics. He has obtained research grants from the International Development Research Center (IDRC) Canada, National Science Foundation (NSF), Sri Lanka and other University Research grants. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), USA. He is member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society. His major received the Presidential Award for Scientific Research in 2018 and 2019. He has won numerous Best Paper Awards in International Conferences such as the 13th IEEE International Conference on Computer Science & Education (ICCSE), Colombo, 12th IEEE International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS-2017), Peradeniya, 17th International Conference on Advances in ICT for Emerging Regions (ICTer2017), Colombo, and 9th IEEE International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS-2014), Gwalior, India. He has also published his work in numerous high impact indexed journals such as IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Access, IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurements, IEEE Communication Letters, IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, Elsevier Journal of Food Engineering, Elsevier Applied Energy, Elsevier International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems, International Journal of Photoenergy, PlosONE, Education Sciences, Energies, Sensors to name a few.
- Remote Sensing and GIS: Signal processing and Deep Learning-based algorithm development for hyper spectral image (HSI) analysis, unmixing, abundance map generation and end member extraction. Utilization of HSI for lithological, land cover mapping and land scape temporal variation detection.
- Smart Grid NILM: Development of Signal Processing and Deep Learning based algorithms for non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) under voltage fluctuating conditions, while incorporating solar power influx. Utilization of usage pattern analysis for improved performance of NILM. Focusing on its applications for demand-side management in the smart grid. Demonstratable end-to-end hardware solution for NILM developed with real household data.
- Renewable Forecasting: Sky image-based forecasting system for cloud cover mapping and micro-level solar irradiance prediction using image processing and computer vision techniques.
- Renewable Integration: Impact assessment of Solar PV penetration on LV networks. Development of state estimation algorithms for LV networks with high PV penetration. Development of a coordinated PV rephasing algorithm based on swarm optimization for maximization of renewable energy integration capability. Development of control strategies to mitigate voltage violations in LV networks due to PV integration using near real-time PQ control.
- Wearables for Biomed: Developing non-intrusive, non-transmitting wearable devices utilizing signal processing and deep learning for fetal condition monitoring and breathing pattern analysis for pregnant mothers, based on inertial measurement unit data. Extension of work towards uterine Muscle contraction preterm risk analysis.
- Wearables for Gait and Posture: Human limb movement monitoring using wearable multi-sensory inertial measurement unit. Utilization of data analytics and deep learning for human gait analysis and activity monitoring. The work attempts to distinguish subtle changes in gait and posture and identify hand movement patterns distinctively to ascertain burden of repetitive movements on joints to determine susceptibility for musculoskeletal disorders.
- Multi-Spectral Imaging: Food quality analysis, adulteration and condition monitoring of both solid/powdery and liquid-based food using reflective and transmittance based multispectral imaging techniques. Development of tools for functional mapping of adulteration levels in contaminated food for quality control purposes. Utilization of data driven unsupervised clustering tools for oil re-heating activity recognition. Applications focusing on fungal growth estimation via spectral imaging.
- CV based Smart Surveillance: Computer vision-based solutions for road traffic monitoring through CCTV feeds and the use of computer vision for human activity recognition in groups. Specific focus on usage of vision-based transformers for action spotting in video footage.
- CV and Image Processing for Enhancement and Segmentation: Computer vision and image processing for image enhancement under low light conditions inspired via retinex models. Utilizing of surface information for non-uniform image segmentation.
- Agent Based Models for Policy: Development of probabilistic learnable models for human motion modeling and simulation. Application of human motion models for human behavior emulation under pandemic conditions for threat assessment and optimal containment.
- Data Analytics for Sociology and Education: Utilization of data analytics and signal processing for analyzing the socio-economic impact of the COVID19 pandemic. Utilization of unsupervised clustering techniques for analyzing commonalities in impact of different demographic groups.
