Biography

 

Dr. Ruwan D. Ranaweera earned his B.Sc. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering in 2001 from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He joined the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya, as a probationary lecturer in the same year. In 2003 he received the Fulbright scholarship to study in the School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, Indiana, the U.S.A. where he earned his M.S.B.m.E in May 2005. Ruwan worked as a teaching assistant in the school of Biomedical Engineering and won the Estus H. and Vashti L. Magoon Award for Excellence in Teaching awarded by the College of Engineering, as well as the Graduate Student Award for Outstanding Teaching by the Purdue University Teaching Academy in 2009. For his Ph.D., he worked on functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) related issues in functional brain mapping of the human auditory system. He earned his Ph.D. in December 2010 from the school of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Purdue University. He has served as the Director of the Computing Center of the Faculty of Engineering from 2018 to 2020. Dr. Ranaweera was awarded the President’s Awards for Scientific Publications for his research publications in 2012 and 2016. Ruwan has been an active volunteer. He has served in IEEE Sri Lanka Section in many capacities, including the Chairman (2015), Chair-elect (2014), Secretary (2013), Treasurer (2011). He has represented Sri Lanka in many international IEEE events, including the IEEE Sections Congress 2014 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Ruwan also served as the Awards Coordinator of the IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific Region) Student Activities Committee (2017) and as a Committee Member of the IEEE Region 10 Membership Development Team (2016). He also served as the General Chair for the 12th IEEE International Conference in Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS) 2017 and as the hosting section chair of the IEEE R10 SYW Congress 2015. Dr. Ranaweera was involved in many national-level activities. He was the chairman of the panel of experts on health sector development in the Biomedical Engineering subcommittee of the Ministry of Health (2012-2015). He was also involved in many committees in the Ministry of Health from 2012 to 2015. Dr. Ranaweera is an independent TEC consultant of the Biomechanics Lab (2020) and was a member of the expert committee to establish a Sports Biomechanics Lab at the Institute of Sports Medicine, Ministry of Sports (2016). He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya.
