IEEE International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS) was hosted for the 17th time from 25th to 26th August, 2023 at Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The ICIIS, the first IEEE conference pioneered by a Sri Lankan institution, is organized as an annual conference since 2006, with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Indian Institutes of Technology sharing hosting duties biennial. The conference received international recognition through the technical co-sponsorship of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE), USA, IEEE Sri Lanka section, IEEE PES Sri Lanka and IEEE SigPro Sri Lanka.

Innovation, Regeneration and Transformation are essential components in sustainable and thriving economies, industry and communities, especially in fields of engineering such as future energy, transport, communications, consumer electronics, computing, healthcare and manufacturing. With this view the ICIIS 2023 set its theme “INNOVATE, REGENERATE and TRANSFORM: Advances in Engineering for Sustainable Growth”. Over 160 technical paper submissions, received from 14 countries, showcase the international recognition the conference has achieved. Also, the conference brought together local and international academics, postgraduates and undergraduates, as well as industry representatives under one roof with the objective of sharing knowledge, research collaborations and innovations.

The 2023 IEEE 17th ICIIS was organized jointly by the DEEE and IEEE Central Region Subsection, Sri Lanka under the leadership of its chairperson Prof. Maheshi Dissanayake. The conference consisted of three pre-conference workshops, two pre-conference tutorials and one special session. The Inauguration Ceremony was held on 25th August 2023, from 8.55 am onwards at EOE Pereira Theater at Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, with Prof. M. D. Lamawansa Vice Chancellor, University of Peradeniya, as the Chief Guest, and Eng. Thanuja Samaranayake, Head of Global EHS and Risk Management, Ansell as Guest of Honour. The conference successfully concluded after six technical paper presentation sessions, with a total of 21 tracks and three keynotes on 26th of August. At the closing ceremony, the best papers in 6 technical tracks were recognized and the conference was handed over to IIT Madras for ICIIS 2024.

Moreover the conference received the Gold sponsorship from Ansell, Silver Sponsorship from Synopsis, and Bronze sponsorships from Vega Innovations, and London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). The SLTMobitel provided the data sponsorship.
